Memorial for PFC. Gerald "Mike" Kight, KIA/MIA, Operation Market Garden, September 1944

I was honoured and moved to participate in this historic service.

Last autumn three Dutchmen; Paul Geutjes, Mario Wijnhoven and Rick Hermsen; who have been affectionately dubbed The Three Musketeers, recovered the remains of Pfc. Gerald "Mike" Kight in a farmer's field near Groesbeek in the eastern Netherlands. Mike was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne and fought bravely to his death during the failed allied mission Operation Market Garden, which occurred from 17 to 25 September, 1944. We know of his heroics from the 150 spent casings that were found with him and an account from the lone survivor of the battle who recalled that Mike was severely wounded as he fought on.

Not enough can be said of The Musketeers who spend their own time and fund these recovery missions on their own. Without their dedicated service Mike and several others including a German soldier may very well have never been found and returned to their families. I intend to do whatever I can to help further their cause from such a great distance.

Many thanks to the residents of Bingen and White Salmon, Washington for their respectful participation and glorious turn-out in support of welcoming Mike home. I'd also like to tip a wing to the pilots of the WWII spotter planes who flew over the motorcycle procession and cemetery service. Q, from Iraq War Heroes, (iraqwarheroes.org) for his outstanding photos, perennial support and participation. And, of course, the Patriot Guard Riders of whom I am proud to be a member as we ride to honour the memory and service of our brothers and sisters.

We were able to capture enough usable footage to build a respectful memorial to Mikes' memory but a lot of work remains. There's a bit of film that still needs to be shot, interviews to be conducted with Frances and Robert Hembree to be conducted, copyrights for additional footage must be secured as well as sound, music, colour correction and editing to be done. This segment is my priority and focus of my work until an honourable tribute is completed. However, I remain at the mercy of volunteer editors who contribute their spare time and services until more donations and funding arrive; every cent of which will be dedicated to the completion of this segment of the film.

On my schedule page you will find that I was to attend the Fossil Run, May 25-28th. This was meant to be a fun ride and opportunity to relax and meet more veteran bikers. If I told you I was going I hope you'll understand that work must come before play and Mike's memorial must take precedence. I would feel remiss if I spent the personal savings I have set aside and valuable time camping when both can be used working to honour Mike's memory. Rest assured I will continue to support ABATE.

Stay tuned to this page for updates and progress reports as we assemble Mike's Memorial.

Redwood Run Update

Heading home from Laughlin via the PCH and 101  I re-conned Piercy, California and the Redwood River Resort in very nearby Leggett. Given the hour and my apocalyptic attire, appearance and conveyance I fully expected the lone clerk to inform me that there was no room at the inn, so to speak. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The clerk turned out to be Billie, the owner, fellow Brit and lover of bikes and bikers. Turns out Billies joint is party central for the Redwood Run. I had a very relaxing hike down to the river where not an unnatural sound could be heard - not so I would imagine come June 8th.

My cabin had everything one could need and more, was very clean and had strong running hot water. I had quite a nice rest there. Sadly, Billie tells me, all the cabins are hired for the run and RV space appears to be going fast. There seems to be plenty of camping though and it looks like the Redwood Run will win out over Hell's Canyon this year. Contact Billie at: www.redwoodriverresort.com

Laughlin River Run

The Laughlin River run was successful and great fun. 3000 miles in ten days! We obtained some good footage and conducted several interviews. I was quite pleased to meet Jonathon, Frank, and Bill and look forward to spending time with all three again in the future.

Cheers of Biblical proportions to Brad Peyree and the rest of the Christian Motorcyclists Association of Yuma, Arizona, www.cmausa.org for providing coffee and a hell of a breakfast every morning at Davis Camp, Bullhead City, Arizona. Biscuits and gravy, blueberry pancakes, chorizo egg and potato burritos, sweet breads and coffee that could only be brewed by a Marine. All at absolutely no charge! I'm sure it's not an easy task feeding hundreds of hungry bikers every morning and they handled the whole mess station with enthusiasm and loving kindness. Thanks for all your hard work guys and gals, see you all next year.
